With many couples now choosing to incorporate a variety of non traditional elements into their wedding day, the bridal speech is an increasingly popular and much welcomed addition to the modern wedding. Gone are the days that you can expect to hear only from male members of the bridal party, brides are now viewing their wedding day as the perfect opportunity to publicly thank their family and friends, rather than following the traditional route of allowing their new husband to do so on their behalf.
With no traditions or structure to follow, a bride can be creative with the content of her speech. With many brides choosing to start by thanking guests for celebrating their wedding day with them. A special mention is often given to bridesmaids and flower girls with some brides choosing to present gifts to the bridal party throughout her speech, a role which was traditionally reserved for the groom.
A brides speech is the perfect time to thank each set of parents. An ideal moment to speak from the heart and thank her parents for their love and support over the years. This special moment can be further personalised by sharing a favourite childhood memory, before thanking her new in-laws for the warm welcome to the family as well as expressing how excited she is to be the newest member of their family.
The majority of brides choose to close their speech by dedicating a few special words to her new husband, often reciting a comical memory of how they met, their first date or when she realised he was the one.
However a bride choosing to address her nearest and dearest the most important point remember is to have fun, enjoy this unique moment and be yourself.
Are you considering delivering a bride’s speech on your wedding day, or do you think this should be a job left to the men? I would love to hear your thoughts.
